We were now travelling
up to the Northern Tip of the Cape York Peninsula. The Northernmost point of
Australia. First on the way to the Top, we were travelling past the
old Laura Homestead, a historic farm site during the goldrush at the Palmer
goldfields nearby, with a need to supply meat and farm produce to almost 17'000
people at the peak in the goldfields. Passing thru the Lakefield
National Park, the second largest in Queensland, with many beautiful spots on a
number of waterholes and rivers, where wildlife watching is one of the
activities. A strenuous drive of approximately 600km on partially very
bad roads, brought us then within 2 days to the top. On the way back we visited
the Elliot-, Twin- and Fruit Bat Falls, they offer a number of beautiful
possibilities for swimming. Near Laura we walked up to the Turtle Rock lookout
and visited the Split Rock Gallery which features Aboriginal rock art, dated as
far back as 13'000 years. Finally we landed again at the Seaview Motel
in Cooktown, for some necessary relaxation and for a lot of cleaning up and
dust removing. |
