Since we in the meantime
have driven more then 11'000 km with our Landcruiser, it needed it's 10'000 km
service carried out. Which we had taken care on Monday as well as 2 run down
tyres which needed replacing. In the evening we visited the Open Air Cinema in
Broome to watch the Wild Wild West Movie. From Broome we drove to Port
Hedland, Whim Creek and Tom Price. Along the way we passed the
Millstream-Chichester Nationalpark. At the Whim Creek Hotel in the
Ladies Toilette, we for the first time in our lives were able to watch the
poisenous Red Back Spider at work. She was trying to rope its prey up
underneath the rim of the garbage bin she had her net woven on. In Tom
Price we took a tour to the nearby Iron Ore Mine of Hammersly Iron, which
belongs to the Rio Tinto Group. From 6 Mines scattered around the Hammersley
Ranges, 54 Million Tons of Iron ore where shipped to the world markets in 1998.
It is time and time again fascinating to see these gigantic operations moving
billions of tons of earth. The iron ore here is of extremly good quality. It
contains around 70% iron. From Tom Price we discovered the beautiful
Karijini Nationalpark. We visited numerous Gorges which at times featured
slightly difficult walking tracks. Usually at the end of these walks a
rewarding swim in one of the many pools awaited us. At the end of the week we
drove back north to Broome. Not missing to visit beautiful Eighty Mile
Beach. |
