We started this week of
with a visit to the Ewaninga Rock Carvings, Chambers Pillars and the Rainbow
Valley. The Ewaninga Rock Carvings are thought to have been made by
the use of a small chisel like stone that would have been guided along the rock
surface whilst been beaten with a heavier stone. Another 120 km
further we found the Chambers Pillars. These pillars were discovered by John
Doual Stuart in 1860 on his first Exploration from Adelaide to the Northern
Coast of the Continent. A few years later the intercontinental telegraph line
was built pretty much following his tracks. From here we drove another
150 km to the Rainbow Valley. The Rainbow Valley was created over millions of
years by erosion through wind and rain. Basically the still remaining
rockformations had a thicker covering of a harder rock type. This prevented
them so far from beeing torn away by erosion as well. Then we drove to
Alice Springs fronm where we wanted to go on to Hermannsburg. In Alice we
expirienced our first 2 days of rain during the first 3 months of our trip. we
waited for the bad weather to subside and visited then the Palm Valley in the
Finke National Park. The next stop was then Kings Canyon where we
enjoyed a beautiful but streineous walk around the canyons edge. After the 3
hours walk we drove another 300km to the Ayers Rock Resort. Here we enjoyed the
sunset at Uluru (Ayers Rock) and walked around the base of it the next morning.
since it got very hot in the afternoon, we retreated to the pool. Later in the
evening we travelled to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) to have Picnic and to sample the
sunset there as well. The next day we walked along the valley of winds trail
and into olga gorge. This busy week was concluded with a 250 km drive to
Erldunda Roadhouse where we stayed the night. |
